Burning Japanese Knotweed

You can burn Japanese knotweed, but, it is highly appropriate to use a professional Japanese Knotweed removal service to dispose of this highly invasive plant from the contaminated site if Japanese Knotweed grows there.

It is feasible to burn the plants waste on your contaminated land after letting it dry out completely first, but Japanese knotweed rhizomes may still survive the burning procedure, so you will still need to have any burnt waste transported to the specialist landfill site.

To remove Japanese Knotweed farmers burning the plant waste may have further legal responsibilities to follow. Burning is one of the best-proven ways of Japanese knotweed removal, and it is undertaken as controlled incineration, usually at the infected site.

How do you Incinerate Japanese Knotweed?

Japanese knotweed incineration is only effectual when the plant itself is absent of moisture as the stems of the plant need to be fully dried out. Once this has occurred, the plant can be burnt, to make sure that there is no chance of it re-growing.

As it is classed as controlled waste if you are a business that wants to burn the plant you must tell your local authorities:

  • Tell the Environment Agency a week before you burn it
  • Tell the Environmental Health Officer at your local council offices

You do not need to do this if you’re burning the waste privately as an individual but you should check with your local council that any burning is permitted.

Japanese Knotweed Disposal

The invasive species of weed knotweed’s plant stem, crown and rhizome may survive burning and knotweed spreads if it not been destroyed effectively so you must dispose of any remaining material following the guidance on how to bury or dispose of it off-site. You’ll also need an environmental permit or registered waste exemption if you’re a business, this includes if you’re a farmer.

To get rid of Japanese Knotweed you must use a registered controlled waste carrier and a fully authorised landfill site or suitable disposal site. You must follow the law if you are going to transfer invasive weed by road and you are discarding of any waste that has or might have the weed still in it.

You must dispose of Japanese knotweed waste off-site by moving it to a disposal facility that is authorised, such as a specialist landfill site that has the right environmental permit.

Before you transfer Knotweed waste you must:

  • check with the controlled waste site in advance to ensure they have got the correct permits to accept material containing invasive plant material. The waste site may also need time to prepare
  • tell the waste site that you’re transferring Japanese knotweed waste

When you transfer the Japanese knotweed waste you must envelop it in your vehicle so that no waste can escape.

You also must not:

  • dispose of knotweed with other surplus soil
  • sell soil contaminated with Japanese knotweed in it as topsoil

You can only reuse knotweed contaminated soil after chemical treatment, on the site where it was produced. You could face a fine of up to £5,000 or be sent to prison for up to two years if you allow infected soil or plant materials from any waste you move to spread into the countryside.

You can oversee the management and disposal of Japanese knotweed yourself, or you can hire a specialist such as ourselves, JBB Japanese Knotweed Solutions, and we can give you all the information you will need and remove the weed from your land completely and efficiently.
