Sifting & Screening Japanese Knotweed

As Japanese Knotweed spreads on its endless search for growth and nourishment, destructive Japanese Knotweed can grow through brick walls and concrete when it finds a weak spot such as a crack. As it travels, it will cause incalculable damage to buildings, pavements, foundations and even raid properties if they get in the plants way.

The strength and velocity of Japanese Knotweed would almost be something you could respect if it was not for the damaging nature of this nefarious weed. Ever zealous to increase its territorial rule, the invasive plant Japanese Knotweed will penetrate the smallest of cracks travel its way through underground sewers and drains.

Together with its determination and flexibility, Japanese Knotweed brings a voracious growth which makes it a truly unwanted garden pest. You can sift and screen Knotweed infected soil and remove all rhizome material from the weeds underground root system.

Controlling Japanese Knotweed
After diagnostic tests, the soil is passed through a variety of screening processes and contaminated soil can be transported to a properly licensed landfill site, burned on-site or taken to a biomass power station to be used as a fuel. The remainder of the soil can be reinstated on the site which removes the need to import large amounts of backfilled soil.

This Japanese Knotweed eradication process includes the excavation and treatment of the contaminated soil on-site to eliminate the Japanese Knotweed and make the soil adequate for reusing again as backfill at the site within a comparatively short period of time. The favoured treatment is to screen the soil on-site to remove the rhizomes, combined with the application of a good herbicide to remove the risk of any future re-growth of the plant. In locations of the site where excavation cannot be performed, other treatment types should be considered.

Using heavy plant machinery, a slim layer of topsoil is scraped back and then it is sifted or screened by a team of Japanese Knotweed surveyors. Knotweed screening only takes a couple of days, dependant on the size of the site. Once the whole site has been properly screened, it is ready for prompt development.

Infected soil is excavated using a Rubber Duck excavator (Wheeled Excavators are also known as Rubber Ducks in the trade due to their duck-like appearance and tendency to “bob about” whilst working. They are mounted on rubber tyres which makes them perfect for work on streets and roads to prevent damage from the steel tracks of regular excavators), capable of digging to at least two metres deep. The earthwork is overseen by Japanese Knotweed experts to make sure that the soil containing rhizome`s, roots and crowns is entirely Knotweed free.

The whole process is aimed to decrease the amount of soil infected with Japanese knotweed being sent to a landfill site, with cleaned organic matter positioned in a known spot on-site and monitored by Japanese Knotweed consultants for around 12 months and will make informed decisions if the weed is being controlled or is spreading from that area.
