What is Variegated Yellow Archangel?

Variegated Yellow Archangel (Lamiastrum galeobdolon subsp. argentatum) is a fast-spreading invasive plant commonly found in woodlands, gardens, and shaded areas across Scotland.

Originally introduced as an ornamental ground cover, its attractive silver-marked leaves and yellow flowers conceal its aggressive spreading habit.

Once established, it can quickly dominate an area, smothering native plants and becoming extremely difficult to remove.
Native to Europe, this plant became popular in UK gardens during the 20th century. Its ability to thrive in shaded environments made it a favourite for landscaping—until its invasive nature was recognised.

How Does Variegated Yellow Archangel Spread?

Variegated Yellow Archangel spreads through runners and discarded garden waste, with infestations often originating from fly-tipping or uncontrolled growth near woodland edges. It can spread up to 2 lateral meters in one growing season.

What are the Environmental and Structural Risks?

Once established, Variegated Yellow Archangel forms dense mats that outcompete native ground flora. This leads to a significant reduction in biodiversity and alters the natural balance of ecosystems. It is especially problematic in ancient woodland habitats, where it threatens rare native species.

Listed under Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to plant or allow this species to spread in the wild. Landowners must take reasonable steps to control and prevent further spread, especially in sensitive ecological areas.

How to Remove Variegated Yellow Archangel

At JBB Knotweed Solutions Ltd, we offer targeted removal strategies that are both effective and environmentally responsible.

Our Treatment Methods

  • Herbicidal Treatment: Effective during the growing season with foliar applications targeting young shoots. Repeated treatment may be required due to rhizome regrowth potential.
