Giant Hogweed is a highly invasive and harmful plant that has been causing problems in Scotland for decades. Its towering size, ability to outcompete native plants, and the severe skin reactions it can cause, make it a serious threat to both the environment and human health. As we head into the summer months, it’s important to be aware of this plant and take appropriate measures to control its spread.
In this week’s news, we’ll share five interesting and perhaps lesser-known facts about Giant Hogweed:
Giant Hogweed is not native to Scotland or the UK. It was brought over from the Caucasus region of Central Asia as an ornamental plant in the 19th century, but it quickly spread and became an invasive problem in the UK.
The sap of the plant contains chemicals called furanocoumarins, which can cause a reaction known as phytophotodermatitis. This can lead to blisters, burns, and long-lasting scars, and can be triggered by sunlight.
Giant Hogweed is one of the tallest plants in the UK, and in extreme cases can grow up to 5 meters tall. Its stem can also be up to 10 cm in diameter.
Giant Hogweed is known for out-competing native plant species and reducing biodiversity in areas where it grows. It can also cause erosion along riverbanks and streams.
Due to its size and the large number of seeds it produces (up to 50,000 per plant), controlling Giant Hogweed can be a difficult and time-consuming task. Herbicides and mechanical removal can be effective, but it requires expert knowledge and experience to do so safely.
